Choosing a wall colour with the help of Photoshop

I'm thinking of painting the living room. Or perhaps using wallpaper. Currently the walls are bright white. Since there are also a number of white pieces of furniture, the room feels a bit cold. The room has a north facing window, so I don't want to use too dark colours. That would make the room very gloomy and I like it light and airy. But how do I know what colours I will like? Which colours go with the furniture? Time for an experiment.

I took a picture of the wall with two things that will have to go nicely with the colour: my antique cabinet and a plant (actually a very nice Ficus variety named "Ficus Binnendijkii Amstel Gold").

• With Photoshop, I created a selection of the wall by using Magic Wand in many steps. The selection was saved as a Named Path.
• Then I added a Color Fill layer (Photoshop 6 and up, IIRC) and applied a mask from the wall selection
• On top of that Color Fill layer I added a Hue/Saturation layer so that I could play with the colour choice to my hart's content.
