Sharpening and downsampling scanner images
Wilfred van der Vegte has some tips on using Photoshop's unsharp mask filter:
Sharpening and downsampling.
My flavour-of-the-month workflow for creating the images on my homepage is:
- Start with a 3800px 16 bit full res. scan, in Adobe RGB
- Apply levels, color correction etcetera
- USM 400, 0.3, 0 (Color negatives are probably better of with a higher threshold)
- Retouching
- Bicubic resize to 2400px
- USM 300, 0.3, 0
- Bicubic resize to 1200px
- Reduce color depth to 8 bits
- USM 150, 0.5, 10 (Edit > Fade somewhat)
- Color space conversion to sRGB (Image > Mode > Conversion to Profile).
Perhaps some extra color correction with Adjustment layers.
- Bicubic resize to 600px
- USM at about 150, 0.5, 10
