I bought the NERD and Joss Stone CD’s from Virgin Records with the COPY CONTROLLED labels on it. You must be really backwards to market an audio CD that might not play on legitimate Audio CD players, for example car CD players
. Because the CD is COPY CONTROLLED, you should, however, be able to use it on a PC.
So the message Virgin Records and IFPI is sending out to me is:
(1) It is okay to play music on your computer, that very same machine that makes it so easy to COPY cd’s. Please make sure to make that one backup of our music that you are allowed to have by Dutch law.
(2) You are not supposed to listen to our music on your car CD player. You never saw our contract hiphop superstars listen to music from their car audio systems, did you? Did you?
So I pay 18 euro to put up with that nonsense? Hah! Here’s my protest button:
On the other hand, I have to give Virgin Records credit for not displaying the official Audio CD logo on the sleave or disc. You can’t really accuse of them of selling me an Audio CD. I bet there isn’t any copyright legislature on the medium they’re selling me. There’s a loophole in their story ;-).
